James A Grant (one of the better lectures)

James A Grant

didn’t want to be a photographer to start with wanted to paint portraits.

started to consider photographer as a thing when at A-Levels like me.

enjoy being funny in his personal work.

using the camera as a tool to document.

So many photographers you have to fight for the jobs, you have to seek them out.

Force you place in the industry.

photography was becoming stronger than his paintings.

three years shoot urban spaces though BA started feeling lonely though his work, towards end go BA started shooting people again.

have to work for free for the first few times.

don’t produce work that will get me good marks, whether people like it or not as long as i
enjoy it and put myself in to it, it will succeed.

will push peoples limits to how far he can take their picture, on the street, in their homes, jumping around like a monkey

Approaches in the industry

Crit
Don’t bombard website with loads of images from one shoot stick it to 1-2. be specific with what I want to communicate.

London most creative
France better production value but not so creative
Milan not grate
New York between London and France

“photography you can live anywhere and go anywhere”

Tokyo has restrictions very protective, Japanese into western

Change cloths in similar style, to create a story
